Artist Bio

Lazaro Gonzalez is a Cuban-born interdisciplinary artist based in Miami, Florida. His practice examines how objects, bodies, and images acquire meaning through the conditions surrounding them. Lazaro often works with familiar forms, altering the way they are presented and understood. His work is concerned with the unstable boundary between an object and the idea attached to it.

Artist Statement

What makes something become what we understand it to be? The work is interested in the instability between a thing and the meaning attached to it. I often begin with something already familiar and alter the conditions around it until its meaning becomes uncertain. The work develops in that gap between what is physically present and what is understood, remembered, projected, or agreed upon. I am less interested in resolving that instability than in making it visible.
